Winterizing Your Roof: Essential Tips from Metropolitan Roofing

Winterizing Your Roof: Essential Tips from Metropolitan Roofing

As the Pacific Northwest transitions into winter, it’s crucial to prepare your roof for the challenges ahead. At Metropolitan Roofing, we understand the unique weather patterns of our region, and we’re here to guide you through the winterization process. A well-maintained roof not only protects your home from the elements but also enhances energy efficiency, saving you money on heating bills. Here’s how to ensure your roof is ready for the season.

1. Inspect for Damage

Before rain and winter set in, take a close look at your roof. Here’s what to check for:

  • Shingles: Look for missing, cracked, or curling shingles. These can lead to leaks during heavy rain or when snow melts.
  • Flashing: Inspect the metal flashing around chimneys, vents, and skylights. Ensure there are no gaps or rust.
  • Gutters: Clear out leaves and debris to prevent water from backing up and leaking into your home.

2. Clean Your Roof and Gutters

Debris on your roof and clogged gutters can lead to serious issues during fall and winter. When water accumulates, it can overflow and damage your roof or siding. Here’s how to clean them effectively:

  • Safety First: Use a sturdy ladder and wear gloves to protect your hands from sharp debris.
  • Remove Debris: Blow or sweep off debris from the roof including any moss that has grown. Scoop out leaves, twigs, and dirt from the gutters. A garden trowel can be handy for this task. Excess moss on roofs can have an adverse effect on your homeowner’s insurance policy, so it’s important to keep moss off of your roof.
  • Apply Moss Treatment: To help roofs last longer, scatter moss treatment on roofs after it is cleaned.
  • Flush with Water: After removing the debris, flush the gutters with water to ensure proper drainage.

3. Trim Overhanging Branches

Overhanging branches can pose a significant threat during winter storms:

  • Safety Hazard: Heavy winds can cause branches to break and fall on your roof, leading to damage.
  • Trimming: Use a saw to cut back branches that are too close. If you’re unsure or dealing with large branches, consider hiring a professional.

4. Schedule a Professional Inspection

While DIY inspections are valuable, a professional assessment from Metropolitan Roofing offers peace of mind. Our experienced team can identify potential issues that may go unnoticed and provide solutions tailored to the Pacific Northwest’s unique climate.

Winterizing your roof is essential for protecting your home during the colder months. At Metropolitan Roofing, we’re committed to ensuring your roof is ready to withstand the season’s challenges. By following these tips and scheduling a professional inspection, you can enjoy a warm and cozy living space, keeping your family safe and comfortable throughout the season. Is Your Roof Winter Ready?

Is Your Roof Winter Ready?

The holidays are upon us and the temperatures are dropping! At Metropolitan Roofing, we’ve been around for over 31 years providing top quality roofs and roof repairs to the greater Seattle area and we know Washington State winter weather can be extreme! One minute is can be mild and the next a snow storm!

Many of you are now wondering what you can do about ice and snow build up on your roof and how to protect your roof and home from the damaging elements. Metropolitan Roofing is here to help!

The good news is some snow on your roof can be beneficial to your home! A thin layer of snow coverage can aid in insulating your home and reduce your heating and energy costs while protecting it from the freezing elements. To maximize your energy efficiency consider adding insulation to your attic space and improving your roof ventilation to avoid condensation damage. If you are currently having your roof replaced be sure to have a self-sealing membrane installed under the new roofing system to help prevent water damage. If you have a metal roof it is a great idea to install snow guards above your entrances to avoid falling ice and snow as well as damage to your gutters.

However unlikely in the Pacific Northwest, if you find you’ve gotten 2 feet of snow on your roof it is time to remove it to avoid damage to your roof. In this situation you can hire a roofing company to remove it professionally or remove it yourself if it is safe.

And even MORE good news! The cost of lumber has gone down dramatically making your roof project more affordable than ever! If you are in need of repairs or reroofing now is the time!
